Lots to see in Memphis, Tennessee
Memphis, Tennessee. Home of The Blues, birthplace of Rock & Roll. This has to be the greatest city in the world. An absolute must for Elvis fans, and thousands make the pilgrimage to Graceland every year from every country imaginable.
Downtown Memphis is definitely the place to be, with its many attractions including the famous Beale Street (Tennessee's Number 1 tourist attraction) which boasts 3 blocks of more than 30 nightclubs, restaurants and shops. At 191 Beale Street you will find the Memphis Rock n Soul Museum which provides a 2 hour tour back in time to the birth of rock & roll and soul music, and at just 9 dollars per adult ticket you'd be a fool not to check it out.
To visit the place where Elvis made all his early records, and even have your photo taken with the actual microphone he used, get down to Sam Phillips' Sun Studio at 706 Union Avenue. They say "the tour gives you goosebumps"; now I don't know who ‘they’ are but they sure are right! Standing on the very spot where Elvis recorded, listening to out takes of recordings from the likes of The Million Dollar Quartet and seeing priceless memorabilia from the fifties is so surreal and not an experience you'll forget in a hurry. There is a free shuttle service every day which runs from Sun Studio to the Rock n Soul Museum and then onto the Heartbreak Hotel and the big one: Graceland. There are literally no words I could write that would do this house justice. Visit and experience the magic of Elvis for yourself.
There is a way to see Memphis by land AND water, and it's called ‘Ride the Ducks’ - this vehicle picks you up by the side of the road, drives to the banks of the Mississippi River and plunges in, where it turns into a boat! But if it's shopping you're after, be sure to go to Peabody Place Entertainment & Retail Center which features a wide variety of shops, restaurants and a 22 screen cinema.
Please don't think Memphis is not child friendly; there are many attractions suitable for kids, including Memphis Zoo, Mud Island River Park, Laser Quest and The Children's Museum of Memphis, where children get to learn through experience.
So even if you're not a music fan (but let's face it, everyone is) there is something for everyone in Memphis, Tennessee.
